Gewandhaus Orchestra
Founded more than 250 years ago, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is the oldest civic orchestra in the world and one of the most renowned symphonic ensembles. After a handful of Leipzig merchants began financing sixteen musicians in 1743, the ensemble quickly grew into an orchestra which has made history. Few other ensembles have been as closely involved with the development of the symphonic tradition.

Beethoven - Leipzig to Europe

Since the beginning of the 19th century, Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonic works have been part of the core repertoire of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the first orchestra to  perform the first complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies worldwide during the composer's lifetime, in the 1825/26 concert season. Since then, every Gewandhaus Kapellmeister has conducted "his" Beethoven cycle at the Gewandhaus. In 2011, Riccardo Chailly will present his interpretation of the nine symphonies.
